Map of Puerto Octay
Many have asked about where we will be staying in Chile
We have some catholic homeschooling friends that used to live in the upstate who have generously lent us their home in Patagonia. It has a temperate maritime climate like Washington state which is cool and wet.It usually only snows on the mountaintops. The area is heavily forested. Lumber is a great export crop.
I have bought baseboards for my home from Lowe's that were grown in Chile.
Lake Llanquihue (pronounce Yahn-key- way) is in the southern part of Chile about 12 hrs south of Santiago.
Here is a picture from a yard nearby. Steeply slopes down to the lake which is the 2nd largest lake in Chile at 330 sq. miles - 22 miles long and 25 miles wide and 1148 ft deep. ew! I don't like that at all - never liked deep water that much. Notice the rectangular shapes in the water. Those are fish farms which are very popular in these waters which I would guess are very clean due to the lack of industry in the area though there are farms and sawmills on the lake. That is Volcan Osorno in the background. It is 8700 ft tall and is snow capped year round. It does have skiing on it in the winter and the summer it has the highest zip line run in the Andes. Yes, it is an active volcano but ... active means it has erupted in the last 10,000 years and Chile has 500 active volcanoes. This volcano has not erupted since 1869 but Calbuco to the south of the lake erupted in 1972.
